Under the moniker Fragmentario, María Elena Pombo researches and experiments with materials as a way to explore and share ideas about time, culture and collective consciousness.

Since 2017 a protagonist of her research has been the avocado, which she uses as a memento of the avocado tree in her former family house in Venezuela and to imagine possible futures.

Since 2018, Pombo has worked with a technique that she has defined as "entrelazado", the Spanish word for both textile interweaving and interleaving, a technique in computing used to make data storage more efficient by arranging it in a noncontiguous manner. The duality of the technique's name is a wink at the idea of arranging her textiles as a metaphor to the arrangement of her memories as a part of the Venezuelan diaspora. The technique flirts but never commits to the idea of weaving and uses deadstock silk fibers dyed with plants.

Entrelazados 3D et al. presents a series of tridimensional avocado-seed ‘entrelazados’ and other surprise sculptures that invite participants to explore and reframe our relationships with time and space.

The installation will be open by appointment from September 25th until October 3rd at 505 Johnson Ave. #6, Brooklyn, NY 11237.

The opening will take place on September 25th. Attendees will receive a kit to explore how water quality affects the avocado seed colors.

Entry to the installation is free thanks to the support from New York City Artist Corps, New York Foundation for the Arts, New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, Queens Theatre, Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment.

‘Entrelazados 3D et al.’ is part of New York Textile Month, a month-long celebration of textiles started in New York City in 2015 by Lidewij Edelkoort and directed by Ragna Froda.
