Come learn about using natural dyes! This workshop focuses on colorizing fabric using the skin of red and yellow onions. We will also go through the basics of dyeing with natural sources, including mordants (but we will use no mordants, as the intention is to share the unaltered dyeing possibilities of the onion skins).
Onion skins are a powerful natural dye. Yellow onions create a range of orange tones, while red onions yield pink to brown tones. We will have 2 vats and participants will receive 2 sets of blanks (1 for each or to create a combination).
Every participant will receive:
- 1 silk bandana 22"X22" to dye with either of the vats
- 1 cotton bandana 22"X22" to dye with either of the vats
- 1 zine with a brief history on natural dyes, general instructions and photos of common dye sources
Participants are encouraged to bring other items that they might want to dye.
We will also have mimosas and snacks!
