Fragmentario was founded in 2016 by Maria Elena Pombo as a project to explore natural dyes. A fashion design graduate from Parsons school of design, she started researching and experimenting with natural dyes in 2014, while working as a designer at Michael Kors.

She uses plant materials such as avocado pits, onion skins and dried flowers to dye surplus natural fabrics and make unique textile goods, breathing new life into forgotten materials. She also teaches natural dye workshops in her studio and other places.

Fragmentario's goal is reintroducing dyeing techniques that were widespread before the discovery of synthetic dyes in the nineteenth century.
