Ciencias de La Tierra
Ciencias de la Tierra, Spanish for Earth science, is the branch of science dealing with the physical constitution of the earth and its atmosphere.
Avocado seeds are shown going through weathering, erosion, boiling, melting, and other processes studied in the branch of Earth science. In this case, depicting not the formation of Earth, but the creation of the world of La Rentrada. Just like on Earth rocks dissolve into sand that later become rocks again, at La Rentrada avocado seeds dissolve into avocado seed sand that later becomes human-made avocado seed rocks.
The editing was done by María-Elena Pombo, who recorded the videos in her studio using a Sony Hi8 Handycam Camcorder.
"Ciencias de la Tierra" is part of "La Rentrada", a project that proposes an economy (and an identity) around avocado seeds as a re-imagination of the return of the Venezuelan diaspora to a post-petroleum country. The project was exhibited at Somerset House at the 2021 London Design Biennale, where it won the Theme Medal.
