Avocado Seed Electricity (2021)

‘Avocado Seed Electricity’ was developed as part of ‘La Rentrada’, a project that seeks to imagine an economy around avocado seed.

The inspiration for ‘Avocado Seed Electricity’ was the series of power black-outs that reached an all time high in Venezuela in March 2019. For weeks, regions of the country were left without ways to communicate with each other. The power outages continue in 2022 in parts of the country, with people turning to inventive solutions, such as adapting blenders to be operated mechanically, without the use of electricity.

Drawing from traditional potato-power experiments, Fragmentario created a battery capable of powering a watch. An added benefit of using avocado seeds for this experiment instead of potatoes, is that the seeds are a byproduct that is not needed as food in the world, as is the case for potatoes.

A conceptual proposition, it asks questions about what resources we have in front of us that could help us redefine the future.
