Exploring the secret colors of recognizable plants like avocados, onions and flowers at the New York Botanical Garden.



Rethinking Circularity: Dyeing with Avocado Seeds and Onion Skins

Before the discovery of synthetic dyes, plants and other natural sources were used by all cultures to color fiber.

Discover the history and basics of dyeing with plants by using avocado seeds, which yield pink tones, and onion skins to create a range of earthy hues from yellow and orange to burgundy and browns.

Each participant will receive 3 silk scarves to dye during the workshop, a natural dyes zine and extra avocado seeds and onion skins to dye at home.

Floralia: Dyeing with Flowers

Uncover the hidden and powerful color properties of flowers, as well as the history and basics of dyeing with plants by using different flowers to create tones from yellow and orange to pink and purple.

Each participant will receive one silk scarf to dye during the workshop.
